In our senior capstone at Plano ISD Academy High School, we had to research something meaningful to us and give a presentation.
My project was created a business plan for a non-profit pet café. A pet café has a longue where you can relax with either cats or dogs and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. In many American pet cafés you can adopt some of the pets there.
My project was broken down into several components:
Research Paper
Business Plan and Mentorship
Capstone Website
Panel Presentation
Design Board
The biggest component was the research paper. My research was about how pets reduce stress, how pet cafes benefit others, and how pet cafes can improve.
The most challenging component was the research paper. At the time, I didn't know much about APA format, or research. Our teachers / facilitators were very helpful in guiding us in the right directions and providing feedback.
Mentorship was required in our capstone. Because of my father's business experience as a small business owner, accessibility and availability, I asked for him to be my mentor for this project. He helped me with the basics of my business plan.
What I learned about myself through this experience is that I love helping people. Its my goal someday to own a business, whether profit or non-profit, to help others in some way. Why not have fun while doing it?
Though it wasn't necessary for the project, I made a mock website for my business proposal. You can find the mock website for Paws on Cafe here.
made all of these graphics with images that were free to use for non-commercial use. These are intended to be for a school project, and not commercial use. I used a blueish-purple for my theme and logo to represent peace and tranquility, trustworthiness, and creativity.
This is the PowerPoint from the presentation that I created. With permission from the people who attended my panel, I recorded audio of my presentation.
Attendees: Clara Alaniz, Jana Fry, Adrian Jennings (mentor, parent), Michele Jennings (parent), Nancy Mandell, Duyen Paquette (facilitator of Capstone), Jaye Wells.
The end result was great; at my panel presentation, the judges loved my idea. There are a lot of things I would have changed or done differently now that I know a lot more about businesses. My four years in business related college courses have taught me a lot.
I brought a design board to my panel presentation. These are the graphics that I made and put on it.
